Nutrition and Childhood Obesity
Childhood obesity is a challenge for public health in Brazil, because of the precocity with which harmful effects on health can appear and its possible persistence into adulthood. In Brazil, 32.27% of children under 5 years of age and 29.37% of children between 5 and 10 years of age are overweight, according to the Food and Nutrition Surveillance System (SIVAN). Although childhood obesity is multifactorial, there is a consensus in the literature that the obesity epidemic is due to the increased consumption of energy-dense ultraprocessed foods, excess saturated fats, sugars and other refined carbohydrates, and low fiber and polyunsaturated fats. In this context, a healthy diet emerges as a fundamental strategy to prevent and treat childhood obesity, aiming to improve the physiological and metabolic processes of children. Therefore, the aim of this presentation is to address the importance of nutrition in treating obese children, highlighting healthy eating as an essential way to improve children's health and well-being
