Alan Barker is an Associate Professor in Paediatric Physiology and Health at the University of Exeter and co-Director of the Childrens Health and Exercise Research Centre (CHERC). Alans research within CHERC spans four areas: 1) Childrens exercise physiology, outlining how factors such as age, sex, maturation, and body size and composition impact physiological and performance variables; 2) Paediatric exercise medicine, where cardiopulmonary exercise testing and exercise prescription are applied to various paediatric disease groups; 3) Primary prevention of disease, where the association between physical activity and fitness with health outcomes is investigated; and 4) The youth athlete, where research focusses on monitoring the health and wellbeing of youth athletes.
Cardiovascular Health in Children and Adolescents
Physical activity and fitness have an important role in modifying cardiovascular disease risk in children and adolescents. This talk will discuss the importance of physical activity intensity in modifying this risk, using examples from both observational and experimental (laboratory) studies. In addition, the role of fitness in predicting cardiometabolic risk will be considered, especially in relation to how this may be altered through methods that account for body size and composition. Finally, the potential for high-intensity interval exercise to improve cardiovascular health and fitness in children will be considered.
